the agent shows you a file it made, as a chip you can click
Produced files
#When the agent makes something you asked to see — a screen recording, a screenshot, an exported report, a zip — it shows you the file itself rather than describing it. The file appears as a chip under the step that produced it. Click it and the file opens in the editor.
- The chip carries the file's name, size and kind mark — the same mark a file named in an answer wears, so a produced
.pyand a mentioned.pyread alike. - Nothing is copied into the conversation. The chip carries a path, so a 300 MB recording costs exactly what a one-line report costs, and the file never passes through the model's context.
- There is no download button, because the file is already on your machine. The chip opens it where you would edit it.
- At most 8 chips per step, so one turn cannot bury the transcript.
How the agent does it
#The agent calls show_file with a workspace path and an optional caption:
show_file(path="out/demo.mp4", caption="the recording")It is a way to show YOU a file, not a way for the model to read one — read_file and view_image do that. Because it never reads the file, size is irrelevant to it.
show_file refuses, with a reason the agent can act on, when the path does not exist, names a directory, or sits outside the workspace — so you never get a chip that opens nothing.
In the terminal
#The terminal has no chips, so it prints each file's path and size instead. The agent is told the same thing either way: you can see the file.
If you do not see chips
#Chips need an extension new enough to render them; DGC negotiates this at startup and simply omits them for an older panel rather than sending something it cannot draw. Update the extension to get them back.
